Bulk Water Supply & Tank Cleaning

Emergency bulk water delivery is available within 2 hours across most of Nairobi and other major towns. For properties in peri-urban and rural areas, same-day delivery is available in most cases with a morning booking. We operate tankers in sizes from 3,000 litres to 20,000 litres and can supply construction sites, residential estates, events, and commercial properties. The WHO recommends cleaning domestic and commercial water storage tanks at least every 6 months. In Kenya’s climate, with its high temperatures and periods of reduced supply requiring longer storage times, 6-monthly cleaning is the minimum we recommend for residential tanks and 3-monthly for commercial and institutional tanks serving large populations. Borehole Drilling & Groundwater

Yes — a professional borehole siting survey significantly increases the probability of striking a productive aquifer at the depth and yield required. Drilling in the wrong location in Kenya’s basement rock terrain — which covers much of central and eastern Kenya — can produce a dry hole or very low yield at significant cost. A Maji Hill hydrogeological survey combines desktop geological review, satellite imagery analysis, the WRMA borehole database, field reconnaissance, and geophysical methods including Electrical Resistivity Tomography to identify and rank the best drilling locations. The survey also produces the spatial data required for the WRMA abstraction licence application.

A WRMA (Water Resources Management Authority) abstraction licence is required by Kenya’s Water Act 2016 for any borehole that abstracts groundwater for use. Operating a borehole without a valid WRMA licence is an offence that can result in fines, borehole sealing, and operational disruption. Maji Hill prepares all the spatial data, hydrogeological documentation, and supporting evidence required for a WRMA licence application as part of our borehole siting and drilling service, and manages the submission process on behalf of clients.

Borehole depths in Kenya vary significantly by geology. In the basement rock terrain of central Kenya (Nairobi, Nyeri, Machakos), productive aquifers are typically encountered between 60 and 180 metres depth, with yields commonly ranging from 1 to 10 m³/hour. In the sedimentary aquifers of the coast (Mombasa, Kilifi, Malindi), shallower depths of 30 to 80 metres can yield 5 to 30 m³/hour. In the Rift Valley, volcanic aquifers can produce very high yields at variable depths. A site-specific hydrogeological survey provides a reliable depth and yield estimate before drilling commitment.

On-Site Wastewater Treatment

A conventional septic tank separates solids from liquids through gravity settling but provides limited biological treatment. It requires desludging every 1 to 3 years and discharges partially treated effluent to a soakaway. A biodigester uses anaerobic bacteria in a sealed multi-chamber system to fully digest sewage solids — producing cleaner effluent and requiring no routine desludging when correctly sized for its user population. Biodigesters are now the preferred system for new installations across Kenya and are increasingly required by county authorities for new development approvals.

A soakaway (also called a drain field or leach field) is the underground drainage system that receives treated effluent from a septic tank or biodigester and disperses it into the surrounding soil. Soakaways fail when the soil pores become blocked with biofilm and fine particles — a process called bioclogging — preventing effluent from draining. The most common causes of failure are: solids overflowing from an overfull septic tank and blocking the soakaway; kitchen grease and fat entering the system; and the soakaway being undersized for the actual number of users. Signs of failure include waterlogged ground above the drain field and slow-draining fixtures across the property.

Hotels and restaurants require two things: a grease interceptor (grease trap) upstream of the main wastewater system to capture fats, oils, and grease from the commercial kitchen before they enter and destroy the treatment system; and a main treatment system sized to the peak daily wastewater flow — typically a packaged sewage treatment plant or a multi-stage biodigester. Both must produce effluent meeting NEMA discharge standards. Many failing septic systems can be rehabilitated at significantly lower cost than full replacement. Options include: desludging and biological reactivation with a bacterial inoculant; soakaway rehabilitation or extension where the drain field has partially failed; outlet baffle replacement to prevent solids reaching the soakaway; and retrofitting a biodigester secondary treatment stage downstream of the existing tank to improve effluent quality. Full replacement is needed when the tank has structurally failed, the soakaway is permanently bioclogged and unrecoverable, or the system is so undersized for current load that rehabilitation is not viable. Septic Tank Emptying & Exhauster Services

A conventional septic tank in Kenya should be emptied every 1 to 3 years depending on tank size, number of users, and what enters the system. An undersized tank or one serving more users than designed may need annual or more frequent emptying. Signs it is overdue include slow-draining fixtures, sewage odour from inspection covers, effluent surfacing over the soakaway, and lush vegetation above the tank. A drain that blocks every few weeks despite regular clearing almost always has a structural cause rather than a usage problem. The most common structural causes are: root intrusion through open joints in older clay or concrete pipes (roots re-grow rapidly after cutting if the entry point is not repaired); a displaced or sagging pipe section creating a low spot where solids accumulate; a collapsed section reducing pipe diameter; a misaligned joint forming a ledge that catches debris; and a grease trap that is undersized for the kitchen output, allowing grease breakthrough.
